matto pizza - Italian craziness in Shanghai

The word "grunge" seems to be everywhere right now and I am still not sure, if I like it or not. But I came across this great interior design project under the topic of grunge interiors. It is the Bar & Pizzeria Matto in Shanghai by the Hong Kong based office Pure Creative.
The designers used an interesting mixture of contrasts in colors and materials and I think I can imagine where the definition "grunge" comes from, when we think of it in terms of rough and unpolished. There is for example the contrast in the material; on one hand the raw concrete wall with the visible formwork and on the other hand the cameo ceilings which create a vintage flair in this otherwise industrial chic.
The colors vary from petrol blue, to grey and graphite, whereas the lamps and accessories fill this film noir atmosphere with some warmth in shades of copper and gold. When we look at the furniture, the functionality is even more emphasized with the industrial flair, except for the bench in form of a stretched wing chair which brings once again some cosiness with its check pattern into the room (and yes, here are the grunge checks again!)
