On Saturday Jean Paul Gaultier has staged his last prêt-à-porter show "End of an era" at Le Grand Rex cinema and seemingly all of Paris came out to celebrate with champagne and boxes of popcorn. The collection was more like a medley of his work for which he has invented a beauty pageant under the name "Élection de Miss Jean Paul Gaultier 2015" in which Rossy de Palma played the judge parodying Madame de Fontenay, the behatted former chairwoman of the Miss France committee.
But let's have a look at the candidates: we have the Miss Sporty and the Miss Bling Bling section, followed by the Miss Smoking section which showed the androgyne looks and man tailoring Gaultier is famous for. Especially interesting were the double-breasted jacket/ cocktail-dress hybrids.
Then came the of-a-certain-age gals who teetered down the runway arm in arm with a bare-chested hot guy as a reminder how Gaultier challenged runway conventions and the mainstream attitudes.
With the Miss Rédactrice du Mode, Gaultier devoted one section with a good amount of humor to magazine editors and their signature looks.
But when it came down to pick a winner, the competition ran between Anna Cleveland and Coco Rocha, both wearing Gaultier's iconic cone-bra corset dresses. Coco won, but in the golden glitter Anna wrenched the crown for herself while Gaultier took his final bow. And for all of those with tears in their eyes, we still can anticipate his next Couture show.
